Respect beyond Appearance: Why Self - Presentation Matters
“I felt discriminated against… just because of where I’m from, they treated me differently. They snubbed me, ignored me, as if I didn’t even exist.” These are the words of some people I know, describing experiences that have left a lasting impact. Hearing stories like these from people close to me is heartbreaking.
I believe that no one should be judged based on their skin color or origin. There’s no right to treat others disrespectfully.
It’s a sad truth that, from a young age, we’re often taught to judge: does this person “look good” or “bad”? Trustworthy or suspicious? While meant to protect us, these judgments can sometimes lead to far more harmful attitudes.
I began to wonder and realized: Never once I felt that same kind of discrimination myself? I looked deeper into my experiences to understand why.
Since I was young, I learned the influence of clothing and self-presentation, and I’ve applied it throughout my life. As I grew up and met people from different cultures, I realized that dressing well, holding good posture, and speaking with a calm tone can communicate respect for oneself and for others—and, while it’s not guaranteed, this respect is often reciprocated.
Many think dressing well is just about impressing others, but it goes deeper. It shows love and respect for life, for yourself, and for those around you. Dressing thoughtfully uplifts the atmosphere, shapes the environment, boosts your confidence, and sets the tone for your mood, aligning with your goals and lifestyle.
Imagine if you’re meeting someone important—maybe your boss, your partner, or a friend: what impression would ripped jeans and a hoodie make compared to a smart shirt or blouse and well-fitted trousers? Or think of being invited to a friend’s dinner and showing up in jogging pants. As the host, you’d feel undervalued, as if your invitation didn’t matter. Unlike dressing casually, dressing well shows respect—it reflects that you took time and gave importance to the occasion.
Dressing with intention, maintaining good posture, speaking calmly, and offering a warm smile—these expressions of respect and good manners aren’t temporary. They’re a way of life.
